In the late 1970s, when Yoo Geun-young received a potted plant inscribed with Baekcho—meaning “a hundred kinds of plants”—his interpretation of nature took a profound new direction. This moment became the origin of his iconic series [The Odd Nature], opening a journey into the surreal garden that continues to unfold to this day.

Born out of turbulent times, Yoo’s works embody both personal reflection and a response to today’s global uncertainties. His canvases stir emotions that are at once beautiful and unsettling, immersing viewers in a world where harmony and dissonance coexist.

Yoo’s artistic language reimagines nature through abstraction. Expansive fields of color, intersected by asymmetrical lines and dots, collide in bold contrasts that evoke the vitality of growth and the movement of plants. Rather than reproducing nature realistically, he translates it into his own distinctive abstract vocabulary.
